Paramount just wrapped up its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, and they left fans with a nostalgic gut punch: the first teaser trailer for The Naked Gun (2025) has finally arrived. With Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) at the helm and Seth MacFarlane (Ted, Family Guy) producing, this reboot is shaping up to be an intriguing mix of modern absurdity with classic slapstick.

For those who hold Leslie Nielsen’s legendary portrayal of Detective Frank Drebin close to their hearts, the thought of a reboot might have raised some eyebrows. But after seeing the teaser, it’s safe to say that Liam Neeson looks like he’s about to nail the deadpan comedy that made Nielsen a comedy icon. It’s an unexpected casting choice, sure, but if there’s one thing Neeson has mastered over the years, it’s playing roles with an unshakable seriousness—which is exactly what made The Naked Gun work in the first place.

Adding to the fun, the cast is stacked with names that fit perfectly into this comedic chaos. Paul Walter Hauser—who has proven time and time again that he’s a scene-stealer—joins the ensemble, and his inclusion is nothing short of a chef’s kiss. Also on board are Pamela Anderson, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. That’s a blend of action, comedy, and internet-era humor that could bring something fresh to the table while keeping the spirit of the original intact.

The teaser doesn’t reveal too much, but from what’s been shown, there are plenty of nods to the classic film. It’s modernized, of course, but it doesn’t look like it’s shying away from the signature visual gags, ridiculous one-liners, and the kind of oblivious confidence that made Frank Drebin such an endearing character.

Will it hold up against the original? That remains to be seen. Comedy reboots can be hit or miss, and The Naked Gun is a tough act to follow. But with the right balance of irreverence, self-awareness, and unrelenting absurdity, this could be the rare reboot that actually works.

The Naked Gun (2025) hits theaters on August 1. Buckle up—this might be one wild ride.
