The news was confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, which stated that the filmmaker’s death is under investigation. While the official cause of death was initially unclear, reports later revealed that Baena died by suicide, according to medical examiner records. Baena’s body was discovered at a residence in Hollywood on January 3. The medical examiner’s office indicated that a full report would not be available until the investigation concluded. The news left the entertainment world in shock, as Baena was known for his distinctive storytelling, offbeat humor, and collaborative work with Plaza, whom he had been with for over a decade before their marriage in 2021.

A Creative Force in Indie Film

Baena’s journey in the film industry was marked by his unique vision and penchant for the unconventional. A graduate of New York University’s film school, Baena’s big break came when he co-wrote the 2004 cult hit “I Heart Huckabees” with acclaimed director David O. Russell. The surreal and satirical comedy set the stage for Baena’s own directorial career, where he consistently crafted quirky, heartfelt stories that resonated with indie film lovers.

Movie: Life After Beth

His directorial debut, “Life After Beth” (2014), a zombie romantic comedy starring Plaza, was the first of many projects the couple worked on together. Baena went on to direct four more films, including “Joshy” (2016), “The Little Hours” (2017), and “Spin Me Round” (2022), with Plaza starring in each of them. Their creative partnership became a hallmark of his work, with Plaza bringing her unique flair to Baena’s darkly comedic worlds.

“I was always drawn to left-of-center things,” Baena told Reel Talker in a 2022 interview. He credited Plaza’s talent and willingness to experiment as one of the reasons their professional and personal relationship flourished. “She’s down, and she’s so talented. I’m really lucky,” Baena said.

A Quiet but Strong Bond

Baena and Plaza’s relationship was often kept out of the spotlight, but those close to them knew the depth of their connection. They met in 2011 during a game night and bonded over their shared love of cinema.

In an interview with Page Six, Plaza remarked, “We’re so obsessed with movies. That’s why we’re making movies together.”

Their love story played out quietly over the years, with Plaza occasionally giving glimpses into their relationship. In 2021, she surprised fans by revealing they had gotten married during the pandemic, tying the knot in their backyard with the help of a same-day marriage officiant.

“So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena,” Plaza wrote on Instagram at the time, celebrating their collaboration on “Spin Me Round.”

Despite the lightheartedness surrounding their marriage announcement, the bond they shared was undeniable. Plaza spoke candidly about the importance of having a partner in the same industry. “I think when you’re with someone in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level,” Plaza said in 2019. “So obviously, you are able to support each other and really understand the journey we’re on.”

Baena’s death leaves a significant void in the indie film community. His unique voice and ability to find humor in the darkest corners of life earned him praise from critics and audiences alike.

In addition to Plaza, Baena is survived by his mother, Barbara Stern; stepfather, Roger Stern; father, Scott Baena; stepmother, Michele Baena; brother, Brad Baena; and stepsiblings, Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
